Toward a Deeper Understanding and Theoretical Prediction of Quantum Many-Body Phenomena
Date

Venue
Seminar Room, 2nd floor, AIMR Main Building
Abstract
In this seminar, I will address two themes: (i) the use of machine learning as a new tool to deepen our understanding of quantum many-body physics; and (ii) the design of new materials, illustrated by a theoretical proposal for candidate superconductors.
(i) Developing a machine-learning solver and tackling the spin-liquid problem
In strongly correlated quantum systems, conventional numerical methods may lead to incorrect understanding due to biases arising from human intuition. To overcome this, we have developed a novel methodology based on machine-learning techniques, capable of capturing non-trivial quantum correlations beyond human insight [1]. We applied our method to the frustrated square-lattice J1–J2 Heisenberg model and performed a state-of-the-art analysis, making a substantial contribution toward deepening our understanding of the long-standing physics challenge of quantum spin liquids [2].
(ii) Theoretical proposal of layered nickelates as candidates for novel superconductors
Motivated by the discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates, we carried out electronic-structure calculations for these systems, clarifying their similarities and differences with the cuprate high-temperature superconductors [3]. Based on these insights, we proposed design guidelines for new materials whose electronic structures are even closer to those of the cuprates. These new materials are expected to serve as ideal platforms for exploring high-temperature superconductivity in nickelates [4,5]. Our work represents an effort to extend theory-driven materials development from weakly correlated systems into the realm of strongly correlated systems.

AIMR Seminars and Tea Time
We hold AIMR Seminars and Friday Tea Time as part of the initiative to promote fusion research.

Seminars are presented by AIMR researchers and visiting scientists who provide a wide range of hot topics from materials science to mathematics. The aims of the AIMR Seminar are to build up mutual understanding, communication, and discussions of each other’s research fields.
Weekly held Friday Tea Time is where AIMR researchers and staff members can relax and talk freely while drinking coffee. Expectations of stimulating conversation may arise among the researchers and leading to new research.
From 2024, active fusion research through synergistic effects from AIMR Seminars and Friday Tea Time will be promoted.
