Researcher Exchange Support

AIMR advances researcher exchange with overseas research institutions by conducting its own researcher exchange program and utilizing the university programs.

GI3 Lab (Global Intellectual Incubation and Integration Laboratory)

This program pays salaries, travel expenses, and other costs according to regulations when researchers and students are accepted or dispatched to promote fusion, cooperation, and joint research with overseas research institutions.

The program can be used for the acceptance of international researchers by PIs in Japan, the dispatch of young researchers and students to AIMR by overseas PIs, and the dispatch of young researchers and students to Joint Research Centers (JRCs) according to satellite agreements. It is designed to invite outstanding researchers from overseas and to promote exchange with AIMR researchers.

Also, in 2020 the program was revised so that senior researchers can conduct consigned works remotely in cases where they have difficulties entering Japan.

Over 100 researchers have been invited since the program began in 2010.

Overseas Outsourcing Support System by Core Research Cluster for Materials Science (CRC-MS)

CRC-MS holds an international symposium once a year and otherwise emphasizes overseas cooperation. The overseas outsourcing support system, which is one of the initiatives, promotes academic exchange with overseas research institutions by paying for research expenses. AIMR also utilizes this system to advance joint research. Exchange among researchers is also significantly deepened through workshops and lectures that serve as venues to present and share results.

What is CRC-MS?

CRC-MS is a research base established in FY2017 in conjunction with Tohoku University’s accreditation as a designated national university corporation. It brings together seven graduate schools/institutes/centers within the university in the material science area where the university has particular strengths and serves as a platform for all materials scientists at Tohoku University. AIMR is one of the constituent departments of CRC-MS and also serves as its secretariat.

Visiting Scientists and Visiting Scholars

Even in cases not under GI3 Lab, domestic and overseas researchers can be accepted as Visiting Scientists and Visiting Scholars according to regulations. This aims at the vitalization of joint research and researcher exchange.

Research Support System

Together with promoting exchange, AIMR has arranged a unique support system so that overseas researchers can smoothly initiate their research after their arrival.
