Discrete Differential Geometric Analysis of Ring of Tetrahedra

Abstract
We explore an interesting geometric structure: a ring formed by a chain of identical tetrahedra, each connected by opposing edges. This shape extends ideas from the Bricard 6R mechanical linkage and the Kaleidocycle origami mechanism, while also serving as a discrete analogue of the Möbius band.
What makes this system particularly intriguing is its ability to rotate smoothly, much like a smoke ring, while keeping each tetrahedron perfectly rigid. By optimising the shape of the tetrahedra to minimise “torsion”, we uncover remarkable properties, such as the conservation of constant kinetic energy during motion. We will present both mathematical and numerical results that reveal the geometric and mechanical nature of this structure.
Finally, we shall open the floor to discussion on potential applications, particularly in material sciences, where such mechanisms could inspire novel designs.
AIMR Seminars and Tea Time

Seminars are presented by AIMR researchers and visiting scientists who provide a wide range of hot topics from materials science to mathematics. The aims of the AIMR Seminar are to build up mutual understanding, communication, and discussions of each other’s research fields.
Weekly held Friday Tea Time is where AIMR researchers and staff members can relax and talk freely while drinking coffee. Expectations of stimulating conversation may arise among the researchers and leading to new research.
From 2024, active fusion research through synergistic effects from AIMR Seminars and Friday Tea Time will be promoted.
