Title
Hydrogen Storage in Metal-Organic Frameworks
Date
May 1 (Wed), 2024, 13:30–14:30 on Japan Time
Venue
Seminar Room, 2nd floor, AIMR Main Building
Abstract
Hydrogen storage in nanoporous materials has attracted much attention in recent years, as high gravimetric H2 capacities can be achieved at 77 K using materials with particularly high surface areas. Cryogenic storage by physisorption of hydrogen molecules will safely operate at low pressures, is fully reversible, and has fast kinetics.
After an introduction, hydrogen adsorption experiments at low temperatures will be explained including experimental difficulties and reproducibility problems. Experimental data of the gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen uptake have been analysed for different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) showing a linear correlation of the gravimetric absolute uptake with the specific surface area. The packing density of the powder and the single-crystal density can be used to get volumetric absolute hydrogen uptake as a function of the volumetric surface area. The key to improving the volumetric storage capacity is closing the gap between the low-density powder and the theoretical upper limit of the single crystal by either compaction, pelletizing, or monoliths. For technical applications, the key parameter is the usable or working capacity, which is the amount of hydrogen that can be delivered between the maximum tank pressure and the back pressure required by the end-user utilizing a combined temperature-pressure swing.
The presentation will end with an outlook on recent hydrogen adsorption measurements in MOFs at subcritical temperatures and their potential application for long-distance hydrogen transport.
AIMR Seminars and Tea Time
We hold AIMR Seminars and Friday Tea Time as part of the initiative to promote fusion research.
Seminars are presented by AIMR researchers and visiting scientists who provide a wide range of hot topics from materials science to mathematics. The aims of the AIMR Seminar are to build up mutual understanding, communication, and discussions of each other’s research fields.
Weekly held Friday Tea Time is where AIMR researchers and staff members can relax and talk freely while drinking coffee. Expectations of stimulating conversation may arise among the researchers and leading to new research.
From 2024, active fusion research through synergistic effects from AIMR Seminars and Friday Tea Time will be promoted.
