Support for Researchers
AIMR offers a comprehensive support system through the Research Support Division to help researchers focus on their work in a world-class research environment.
Support for International Researchers
AIMR offers international researchers a world-class research environment. English is the official language in the Institute.
The International Affairs Center (IAC) is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to our international researchers. In addition to serving as the contact point for various procedures required for coming to Japan, the IAC provides Japanese language classes for researchers and their families, AIMR Orientations for new arrivals, and rental services.

The center also provides a full range of support to help international researchers integrate quickly into the AIMR community after they take up their positions, through regular Friday Tea Time, AIMR Seminars, and other opportunities for interaction among researchers.
A designated Quiet Space is available inside the AIMR Main Building for the use of researchers from diverse faith backgrounds. Accommodation for international researchers is conveniently located across from the main building, ensuring a well-prepared environment for their stay.

Common Equipment Room

Located inside the AIMR Main Building, the Common Equipment Room provides access to the standard experimental apparatus widely used in preparing and evaluating materials.
The facilities offer a comprehensive research environment, and dedicated technical coordinators are on hand and manage equipment to reduce the administrative burden on laboratories and allow researchers to focus on their research. By uniting equipment maintenance and management in one facility, we aim to contribute to improving the quality of research by providing an optimal environment for the use of research apparatus. As well as looking after equipment, technical coordinators also provide any necessary support for the introduction of equipment and other technical support to help researchers achieve their goals.
Tohoku University provides a system that allows the shared use of equipment throughout the university. In addition to helping researchers to use these shared facilities, AIMR’s coordinators collaborate with the Core Facility Center (CFC) to provide a comprehensive range of services matched to the needs of researchers and technicians, including use of equipment and technical consultation across the university.
Major Equipments
- FE-SEM (Field-emission Scanning Electron Microscope); JEOL, JSM-7800F
- Sputtering System: ULVAC, QAM-4-S
- Laser Raman Spectrometer; HORIBA, LabRAM HR-800
- TG-DTA, DSC (Thermal Analysis Apparatus); RIGAKU, Thermo plus EvoII
- Xray Diffraction Measurement System (XRD); RIGAKU, SmartLab 9MTP
- Xray Diffraction Measurement System (Laue Camera); RIGAKU, RASCO 3M etc.
Computation-Aid Unit

Obtaining and maintaining computers places a heavy burden on many research labs. The Computation-Aid Unit provides support with these needs, in particular to experimental research labs and young researchers.
By providing access to shared core infrastructure and operational expertise, the unit helps research labs and researchers by reducing the burden of introducing computational servers, allowing researchers to focus more on their research. This helps newly appointed researchers to immerse themselves in their work as quickly as possible after taking up their positions.
Additionally, we offer a wide range of solutions tailored to the needs of researchers, such as providing customized computational resources to research labs and offering technical advice to young researchers.
Pre-Award Support

AIMR provides pre-award support through the Research Promotion Section, International Research Coordinators, and the Director of the Research Support Division to help faculty obtain funding for their research.
We provide comprehensive support matched to the needs of individual researchers and labs to help them obtain research funding. Our services include:
- Identifying external funding opportunities and confirming eligibility requirements
- Giving advice on individual applications including information on research funding according to the career stage, affiliation, and research content
- Offering pre-award seminars to obtain KAKENHI (Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research)
- Creating networking opportunities with successful applicants
- Providing other services such as application editing and support throughout the application process
