Abstract
A novel bio image sensor was invented by fusion of LSI technology and Biosensor technology. The device enables two dimensional visualization of ion distribution which indicates chemical activity of solutions and cell without fluorescence label. The CMOS based image sensor device consists of an array of ion sensing devices covered with functionalized membrane. Figure 1 shows the bio image sensor that can be take a real time proton distribution with 20msec time resolution and 23μm space resolution. Changes in the concentration and two dimensional distributions of several neurotransmitters are detected by charge accumulation.
We have recently reported on the use of the sensor for real time imaging of acetylcholine (ACh), which was not able to be observed yet. Insights in the variation of the concentration of ACh may lead to new methods for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. In this presentation, I will present some application results of the ion image sensors and discuss possibilities of the new tool for biomedical fields.
