New guidelines for development of high quality lithium ion battery
New guidelines for development of high quality lithium ion battery
-Mechanism for loss of lithium in the deposition process of thin films elucidated through the collaborative research between material science and mathematics-
Summary
The research group of Assistant Professor Daniel Packwood, Senior Assistant Professor Susumu Shiraki, and Associate Professor Taro Hitosugi of the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR) at Tohoku University has mathematically elucidated the mechanism of lithium deficiency in lithium manganese oxide thin films, which is known as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. They found that the lithium deficiency is due to the light Li atoms being scattered more strongly than the heavy manganese atoms upon collision with the dosed oxygen molecules. This achievement can guide fabrication of high quality thin films, and pave the way for development of high performance devices utilizing lithium ion batteries and functional oxides.
