Abstract
Liquid metal dealloying has emerged as a promising technique to produce finely porous structures of various nature (non-noble metals, refractory metals or semi-conductors) presenting a high surface area, valuable in a numerous applications (catalysis, battery materials, sensors,...). This process consists in immersing a binary precursor alloy in a liquid metal chosen such that only one element of the precursor alloy dissolves into the metallic melt while the other element reorganizes into a porous structure. The characteristics of the resulting porous material (ligament size, surface area, connectivity) depend on both the formation mechanism occurring at the dealloying front and the subsequent coarsening behavior of the structure by surface diffusion. Using a phase-field model, we first shed light on the details of the formation mechanism. In particular, we show that the onset of the dealloying reaction can be viewed as an interfacial spinodal decomposition and that the kinetics of the process limited by diffusion of the dealloyed element in the liquid phase. In addition, we also developed a phase-field model for surface diffusion to better understand the coarsening behavior of these connected structures. In particular, we demonstrate an influence of the topological characteristics (connectivity of the ligaments) on the coarsening kinetics of the structure.
About Tea Time Talk
AIMR’s Tea Time Talk is a kind of seminar aiming to promote exchange between world’s eminent researchers and young researchers at AIMR, held in a relaxed atmosphere at AIMR’s Friday Tea Time. The following researchers from around the world have given talks at this event so far, and participants have enjoyed discussion over a cup of tea.
