Abstract
Also called the 4th Law of Thermodynamics, the Onsager reciprocal relations express the equality of certain ratios between flows and forces in many-body systems close to equilibrium, as formalized later in the linear response theory by Kubo and others. The importance and usefulness of Onsager reciprocity to systemize observed and predict new effect as well as test consistency of theoretical frameworks is well established in physics and chemistry. Here I discuss the important role that Onsager reciprocity plays in spin caloritronics, the science and technology of understanding and controlling the coupled charge, spin, and heat currents in magnetic nanostructures.
