08/05/2026

On August 4, 2026, AIMR hosted a lab tour for junior high school students as part of the “Summer University Exploration 2026” program.

“Summer University Exploration 2026” is an annual hands-on learning program organized by the Sendai City Board of Education for junior high school students in Sendai. Designed to foster a passion for science, the program gives students the opportunity to experience the excitement and possibilities of cutting-edge research across various facilities at Tohoku University.

This year, AIMR welcomed seven students for a specialized tour titled “Building the Future with Materials: Cutting-Edge Lab Exploration Tour.”

The program began with opening remarks from Professor Ozawa, Deputy Director of AIMR, followed by an overview of AIMR presented by Dr. Suemitsu, Director of the Research Support Division. During the main lab tour, participants visited five AIMR laboratories conducting world-class research.

Opening remarks by Prof. Ozawa, Deputy Director of AIMR

Power generation experiment using a battery made from sea pineapples and pig blood (Yabu Lab)

Experiment observing material property changes in a vacuum (Sato Lab)

Exploring ultra-thin graphene (Kato Lab)

Traffic modeling experiment using mathematical models and miniature cars (Ando Lab)

Observation with a high-performance electron microscope (Common Equipment Room)

The students engaged deeply with the researchers throughout the tour—listening intently, taking diligent notes, and asking insightful questions. At the closing ceremony, Prof. Ozawa presented each student with a certificate of completion and shared encouraging words, expressing his hope that they would cherish this experience and continue to maintain a spirit of inquiry toward small discoveries in their daily lives.

We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who participated in this tour.
