Title: Development of Metallic Glass Nanostructures
Abstract:
Metallic glasses have received attention because they exhibit extraordinary mechanical properties. Far less attention has been paid to metallic glasses nanostructures though they have exciting potentials in heterogeneous catalyst and sensing application. Recently, we found that the self-organized nanostructures including nanowires and nanotubes appeared on the fracture surfaces after a conventional compression test of bulk metallic glasses [1]. However, it is difficult to control their morphologies because they are created during instantaneous process in fracture. Under the support of fusion research program 2009-2011 at WPI- AIMR, a simple drawing process has been developed. We have succeeded to create individual metallic glass nanowires, and carried out nanomechanical characterization of the nanowires [2]. The results show that the elastic modulus is much smaller than that of the bulk owing to the excess free volume in nanowire. Very recently, we have developed a new method to produce a large amount of metallic glass nanowires, namely nanofibers [3, 4]. The versatility of the fabrication process ensures that metallic glasses of a broad range of compositions can be formed, depending on the composition elements used. We would discuss the key of fusion research program, which would provide new insights into nanotechnology and materials science.
