Message from the President

Creating world-class knowledge

The Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR) was selected as one of the top-level research institutes in the world under the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI program) launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and established in October 2007. Director Motoko Kotani, a world-renowned mathematician, assumed office in April 2012, and through her efforts over the past decade, AIMR has today achieved world-class standards in internationalization and exceptional research capabilities as a WPI academy.

Since its founding, Tohoku University has established a philosophy centered around the spirit of Research First, the philosophy of Open Doors, and the policy of Practice Oriented Research and Education. Based on this philosophy, it has produced many talented students and research output, and sent these out into the world. Tohoku University, which was selected as one of the first three Designated National Universities by MEXT, aims to become one of the world’s 30 most respected universities. By continuing to produce excellent research output as a world-class research hub, and developing towards the establishment of a “new materials science” that is based on fusion research with mathematics, AIMR hopes to take the lead in the system reform and internationalization of Tohoku University going forward.
