Dr. Eric Jianfeng Cheng

Associate Professor at Core Research Cluster for Materials Science (CRC-MS)

Dr. Eric Jianfeng Cheng is an Associate Professor at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR), Tohoku University, Japan, and a key member of the Core Research Cluster for Materials Science (CRC-MS). He earned a PhD in Materials Engineering from Tohoku University in 2014 and a PhD in Energy Chemistry from Kyoto University in 2023.

His research focuses on the development of solid-state batteries and structural ceramics. He pioneered direct observation of Li dendrite growth along grain boundaries in the garnet solid electrolyte LLZO, contributing to the understanding of metal dendrite growth mechanism in solid electrolytes.

At CRC-MS, the Cheng Group explores innovative materials that push the boundaries of energy storage technologies. In collaboration with leading global institutions, he strives to create sustainable, high-performance materials that could revolutionize the energy storage industry.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Cheng gained valuable research experience at leading research institutions like the University of Michigan, the University of Yamanashi and the Tokyo Metropolitan University. He remains actively and enthusiatically committed to mentoring and fostering the next generation of Materials Scientists.
