Abstract

An ever increasing demand for better batteries (with high voltage, capacity, and safety) has set extraordinarily high standards for electrolyte materials, which are far beyond the realm of conventional nonaqueous electrolyte design. Highly concentrated solutions are emerging as a new class of liquid electrolytes with various unusual functionalities beneficial for battery applications (Fig. 1). In this seminar, I will talk about our original works on unique features of highly concentrated electrolytes from the viewpoint of their peculiar ion-solvent coordination structure, and discuss their future contributions to advanced battery technologies.
