Assistant Professor or Postdoc Positions (Experimentalist) in AIMR

An assistant professor (AP) and/or postdoc position are available in WPI (World Premier International Research Centers Initiative)-AIMR (Advanced Institute for Materials Research) at Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan. WPI-AIMR is a unique international research center consisting of researchers and participating labs from both Tohoku University and other leading universities and institutions worldwide to push the frontiers of materials science in a highly dynamic, collaborative and open environment. AIMR is conveniently located at 2-1-1 Katahira, Aoba-ku, Sendai, 980-8577, in the center of Sendai and only 15-min walk from Sendai station.

Job descriptions: the successful candidate will lead and develop projects in the interdisciplinary-international joint research lab “Quantum Materials and Spintronics (QMS)” directed by Principle Investigator Prof. Y. Chen; he/she will be based mainly in WPI-AIMR in Tohoku, Sendai and make use of the many state-of-the art facilities in materials research at AIMR and Tohoku University; he/she will also collaborate with and be a visiting researcher at Prof. Y. Chen’s Lab at Purdue University, USA, and may develop additional collaboration with other international and local researchers at AIMR-Tohoku.

  • an experimentalist trained in an appropriate field in science or engineering such as materials science, condensed matter physics, or nanotechnology, with expertise in at least one of the following:
    • Crystal growth/materials synthesis and fabrication (examples include 2D/nano/topological materials and novel superconducting/magnetic materials)
    • Magnetism or spintronics
    • Superconductivity or correlated materials
    • Two-dimensional materials or topological materials
    • Nanodevices
    • Transport or other measurements (such as optical, NMR, scanning-probe-microscopes)

  • language proficiency in English; for AP candidates, proficiency in Japanese is also desired.

  • good communication, presentation and writing skills;

  • ability to work well independently and in a team.


Level of appointment (Assist Professor or postdoc) will depend on qualification and experience of the candidate.

The contract can be renewed by each fiscal year (starting Apr. 1) subject to mutual agreement, continued funding, and applicable institutional policy (such as any term limit, typically 5 years for AP).
